This is how our new aircombat gui looks like in the game right now.
To hell with that. We’ll even throw in a movie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XzQUG0LoCns&hd=1
Balance of the aircombat is subject to change. Right now everything works with values close or idnentical to ones in original game, but since ufos can now close on the xcom, the overall balance changed and we we’ll need to adjust to those changes as well. (in the movie above you can see that interceptor barely wins against medium scout)

Nice stuff
I notice that is room for more Xcom and UFO crafts. Will multi-craft air combat be implemented, and if so how would it be initiated?
Yeah, it will be implemented.
As xcom you can either go with multiple crafts and order the first ones that arrive to ‘follow’ (just like in the original game), allowing other to catch up. You can also make aircraft groups by binding them to a key. Here its automatic that when you send out a group the battle will start only after the last one in the group catches up. As for ufo, its more tricky, we yet need to work on it. Initial idea is similar to grouping in xcom. You can send a group of ufos. If this group gets attacked while on route to its destination, they will fight as one. If they reach their destination, then it will depand on the mission. If mission requires ufos to patrol the area before landing, they will split and be vurnable to beaing taken down one by one. Tactical combat on ground is always one vs one.
Hm… The Interceptors behavaiour looks odd. Its a fighter craft. Its weird for it to fly backwards.
It would probably be difficult to implement and balance out but perhaps Interceptors should be unable to stop nor move backwards. Instead it should fly pass the UFO and try to get on its tale to chase it.
It would be even more difficult to balance if UFOs, Firsestorms, and Lightning could shoot in any directions, but others could not although it seemes more logical from the way they look (since all of them are circular). Or possibly, on the equip crafft sceen you could specify which weapons are in the front or the back. Actually, that would only really matter if in addition to those default distance keys you could move in both dimensions: up the screen and across the screen by clicking or something. Lastly, what is the alien plane in the screenshot? Is it new?
It’s small scout (classification as ‘very small’). We tried not to overwhelm players with new stuff right now. There are 2 new ufo ships, but thats all right now.
Maybe the problem with the interceptor barely winning is because it was loaded with a stingray and a cannon. Who would ever bring a cannon on board when you can have avalanches?
