We’re happy to announce that NineX will host another X-Com project.
We knew about it for some time, but were asked to hold off untill some more progress was done in the project. It’s called openxcom and is a faithful reimplementation of the original engine, cross platform and open source. Therefore the project fills in the hole for those people that wanned ufotts to be open source and/or more faithful.
Go and check it out. Be sure to check screenshots and see how precisely everything is recreated.
Its the third X-Com project hosted on NineX so far. The third one is the well known and estabilished Ufo: Alien Invasion.

Ok, I’ve just gritted my teeth and ignored you saying it a few times, but I can’t any longer – It’s “faithful”, not “fateful”.
Openxcom is looking great. Do you guys see any potential for sharing / collaborating on resources between the two projects?
Thanks, fixed ‘faithful’
.
We’re not planning sharing / collaborating at this time. The other project seems to be focusing on recreating the original game using original resources at the moment. If the author decides to change that, or some modders/codders fork the project we might consider sharing. All in all, graphics for ufotts is a property of our artists, mainly rom and nirven, so the final word will go to them and we haven’t discussed this yet.
btw will be your project open source after finishing… or it was never planned
OpenXcom might support different resources in the future, but that’s a faaaaaaaar future.
i asked about UFO: The Two Sides…
OpenXcom ye.. open source from start
SupSuper was replaying to Tim’s question
.
As for open sourcing, no, ufotts is not planned to be open sourced.
That’s saad.
i will make brainwash on NeFuRii ;P
Well in the end, It will be interesting to see where
OpenXcom goes after implementing the engine.
Since once the engine is done (in a clean way, unlike ufo2k source)
the opensource project will become superfast.
The engine is the rough part
Any project should become superfast with a clean engine.
It’s really sad that all the good work that is done on UFO:tts is not planned to be released as Open Source. That has been the greatest problem of the X-COM community : each new project has been closed source and each time everyone had to reinvent the wheel
(and it will be the same for future project)
I would really like to see the UFO:tts team release the code under an Open Source licence and, particularly, the graphics (under a CC licence for example) as they are beautiful and could be used by either openxcom or ufo2000 (imagine ufo2000 with these graphics : multiplayer right now with lots of screen estate until your own implementation is ready). And all your work would not be lost should the project stops (I’m really not hopping that ^^ ).
So please, consider this inside the team !
Whatever, thanks for the good work !
Thanks Alexandra. I can see myself getting a lot of use out of this sweater! Bonus points that it’s handmade by Nanny and passed down in the family. xo
