It took me some time to write this news. Unfortunetly we are bringing UFO:TTS downloads down and stoping the development. It’s not because we don’t have the time, or that we got bored. Reason is simpler – legality issues. When we started the project we weren’t as concerned about this as we are now. We believed that if we are doing everything from zero and doing it for free – we are doing it legally. Turns out its more complicated than that. All the material that we studied on the internet points towards a simple fact that even things like ‘look and feel’ of any game can be considered intelectual property of their authors. As to the future of the game and the site… it remains open for discussion. The site will most likely remain operative. As to the game itself – we don’t know yet.

too bad
So it’s OK for Xenonauts to develop their game but you stop your development without provocation? Sounds like you really want to do something else.

Umm… ReactOS is still alive after over a decade of making a Windows clone.

All this work and you guys just stop, without anyone mentioning legal issues – and yet rather based on your ‘internet research’. Grow some balls and keep working on it!
At least until someone actually does give you a warning.
I agree with Junmarko, there was no reason to stop development unless you actually got some kind of cease & desist, and I don’t even see that happening since what you were working on was essentially a mod of the original game, especially considering it required the original game to function properly.
If you were planning on going for a ‘completely from the ground up’ approach, you CAN’T just consider the look and feel as IP. Guessing maybe the “Apple suing everyone over anything remotely similar” mentality some companies use got you guys scared over nothing though.
You really guys really make it seem like you actually don’t care on working on the game anymore. Atleast open source it so all that hard work doesn’t go to waste.
I feel happy by reading these blogs. These blogs are very much useful for my friend
Oh, come on! You are at version 0.99 and now want to completely drop everything just because what you read about the legal situation seemed like you eventually could run into problems? Please tell me this is some kind of premature april fool?
NOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This was my favourite project for very long years. RIP…
Hello,
I can not register in the forum, but why not make it a requirement that you own “Ufo: Enemy Unkown / XCom: Defense” to play “UFO: TTS”. Just see “corsix-th” (Theme Hospital) and OpenTTD (Transport tycoon).
Over and out
